This izba was built in the last half of the 19th century in Karelia by the wealthy peasant Oshenev. The large two-storied building was constructed with the harsh conditions of Russia’s North in mind, and so, the living quarters and storage are under one massive roof. Today, it’s a part of the famous Kizhi Pogost, a historical site famous for wooden architectural masterpieces. The rich taiga of Siberia gives us the opportunity to chop up houses made of large cedar, or even a huge diameter log of larch, Angarsk pine or cedar. Cedar has not only unique healing properties, but also reaches a gigantic size, to which other breeds can not be expensive.
Larch or oak woods with great resistance to decay were used for these chairs. To increase this resistance, wood was often burned at the stake or coated with tar. Foundations for wooden buildings were not set in concrete or other such materials but were made by placing logs directly on the ground. Wooden houses were built from logs without using a single nail while using a wide variety of carpentry techniques. The peasant buildings or ensembles of royal mansions combined the monumentality of blockhouses and light-frame extensions and summer rooms with sacramental and scenic interior and exterior trim. Every tourist who visits Irkutsk should see the so-called “European Home,” which was built as an estate for the Schastin merchant family in the 19th century.

A typical izba had only one big room, where the peasants cooked, ate and slept. Izba, a traditional log house, was the most common type of housing for peasants in the Russian lands from the time of ancient Slavs until the early 20th century. The basis of the process of building a house made of cedar wood is directly related to the design of a wooden house, financial support, and actual construction. Before putting the house from cedar into life, we advise you to pay attention to a few points concerning the construction. Popular collapsible designs came after World War II to provide the population with cheap and fast-built housing. The best architects were involved to create cheap complex projects for rural construction. Many of those houses built are preserved to this day, giving shelter to several generations of Russians. Not much of Moscow’s ancient wooden architecture remains, but there are exceptions.
And since the construction of housing in Russia’s vast territory covers a variety of climatic zones, which largely determine the type of structure needed, the architecture of the houses varies considerably by region. Many wooden houses, starting second, as a country house, when there is already a main housing in the city center. However, for most people, the possibility of building a wooden house occurs once in a lifetime. Russia is known for more than 50 types of log cabin designs. However, the most common was the simple five-wall cabin, which is a four-wall rectangular house divided with a fifth wall to create two halves, usually equal. If the family did not have need of a ‘business’ side, they would often have a doorway connecting the halves.
We can build for you a log house or bath house of logs reaching a diameter of more than a meter. The 21st century has set completely new challenges for log-home manufacturers. The use of high-performance construction materials has transformed the art of wooden home construction into a higher level of Russia’ s traditional architectural and building systems from solid wood to frame and panel. Logs, themselves strong and solid, are now enhanced and protected with high-tech sealants, and coatings vastly extend the life of the log buildings. This, of course, often resulted in moisture gaining access to the interior and thus, over time, more and more buildings were constructed with a mezzanine and a loft on the upper floor.

A special tool — the shingled strug — was used to cut grooves lengthwise, and then the shingles were dried for six months. When ready for use, the shingles were impregnated with anthracene oil and painted. For centuries Russian log home architecture relied heavily on shingles for roofing. Shingles were made of wood from fir, ash and, most often, spruce.

Blacksmith Sergey Kirillov spent 13 years in the mid 20th century building an izba in the village of Kunara in the Sverdlovsk Region. This izba looks like a colorful gingerbread house from the story of Hanzel and Gretel, but the figures of Pioneers on the roof are a reminder of its Soviet origin. For centuries, it was the main type of housing for Russians. While more and more Russians today live in residential apartment buildings, izbas can still be found throughout the country, and some are real masterpieces. Which can either look like pantiles, or a more contemporary standing seam roof.
